7 Couture Beauty Looks That Blew Up on the Paris Runways

While Americans celebrated the Fourth of July with elaborate firework displays, Paris Couture Week was busy putting on a show of its own—particularly above the neck. Whether commanding attention from show-goers in person, or eliciting double taps on Instagram feeds, the awe-inspiring, boundary-pushing hair and makeup looks offered up dreamy respite from the blistering summer heat. From Maison Margiela's Cubist cat eye to Valentino's jaw-dropping big hair, here are the seven best couture beauty looks of the week.

The Bouffant Is Bigger Than Ever Before

Simply put: The world stopped when Kaia Gerber floated down the Valentino runway in a plumed, powder pink gown with her chestnut brown lengths pulled back into a larger-than-life beehive that recalled midcentury icons such as Jackie O and Brigitte Bardot, as well as her own mother Cindy Crawford in the '80s. How's that for va-va-voom?
Shockingly Colorful Wigs Reign Supreme

For their haute couture debut, designers Nana Aganovich and Brooke Taylor came out swinging with architectural ruffled frocks, Stephen Jones headpieces, and a slew of Manic Panic-dyed wigs that weren't just vivid—Atomic orange! Canary yellow! Ballet slipper pink!—but also styled to equally striking effect with blunt boy cuts and ultra-teased crops that skewed Mad scientist.

The Cat Eye Gets a Picasso-Like Twist

Makeup artist Pat McGrath has been churning out extreme glamour at Maison Margiela season after season, and designer John Galliano's latest showing was no exception. The standout motif? A single accent eye traced with negative space holographic cyan eyeliner, and, for muse Teddy Quinlivan, extended down the contours of the nose and mouth.

Simple Ribbon Bows Are Still Your Best Hair Accessory

Following a parade of netted veils with lengths worn loose, a handful of models had their manes molded into chin-grazing bouffants and topped off with bow-tied ribbon headbands. Because sometimes big hair calls for an equally sizable accessory.

Introducing the New Punk Pixie...

Hairstylist Guido Palau worked all kinds of shear magic backstage at Dior, but it was Martine Dirkzwager Wu's freshly-shorn, Punkish crop that stole the show. Tousled inwards, then upwards, for a fauxhawk feel, the rising model's abbreviated cut offers up plenty of inspiration for a chic summer chop that will age well into fall.

...and Reimagined Rockabilly Hair

"The Chanel girl is going rock 'n' roll," explained hairstylist Sam McKnight backstage at Chanel. And for the occasion, McKnight whipped each model's mane into a rockabilly-inspired quiff that tapered just above the eye. And the drama didn't end there, as makeup artist Tom Pecheux punctuated each gaze with swathes of shimmery jade-green shadow and dabs of gold-flecked glitter.

Heavy Metal Headpieces Enter Futuristic Territory

Claire Waight Keller may have been paying tribute to Hubert de Givenchy for her second couture collection for the French fashion house, but futuristic embellishments, such as the silver fringed headpieces worn by models Cara Taylor, Julie Hoomans, and Sara Grace Wallerstedt served as cool, conscious contrasts to the sophisticated, retro-leaning formalwear.
